Kids' winter accessories FAQ
What winter accessories does my child need?
Keeping kids warm from head to toe starts with the right winter accessories. A complete cold-weather kit includes a warm hat, mittens or gloves, a neck warmer or balaclava, and a thermal base layer worn right under the snowsuit, finished off with cozy ski socks and winter boots. Our winter accessories are available in sizes ranging from 3 months all the way up to 16 years depending on the style, making it easy to get babies, toddlers, and big kids ready for the exact same snowy day.
Should my child wear mittens or gloves?
Both are great options, and the best pick comes down to your child's age and winter activities. Mittens are the easiest choice for babies, toddlers, and younger kids because they slip on quickly and keep all their fingers together for natural warmth, with styles available from 3 months to size 16. Gloves are ideal for older kids who want extra dexterity to handle zippers, ski poles, and mountain gear. Our Teknik winter gloves come in sizes 6 to 16 and are rated to -30°C (-22°F), complete with Cordura® reinforced fingertips and a removable wrist strap that keeps them on during chairlift rides.
Are your kids' mittens waterproof?
Yes, both our Play and Teknik winter mittens are built to keep hands warm and dry. Both lines are rated right down to -30°C (-22°F) and feature a cozy brushed microfiber lining along with a grip-enhancing palm. Built for everyday recess and snow play, our Play mittens feature a 10,000 mm waterproof coating and a handy hook to clip straight onto their snowsuit, available in sizes 2 to 16 plus a baby version for 12 to 24 months. For mountain days, our Teknik mittens step up to 15,000 mm of waterproofing and add Cordura® reinforced fingertips plus a waterproof zipper pocket for hand warmers or ventilation.
Which winter hat keeps ears warm?
For the coldest days of the season, choose a lined winter hat designed to cover the ears. Most of our winter knit hats are lined for extra warmth, and our Peruvian knit hats feature classic ear flaps finished with braided tassels and a pompom. For little ones in sizes 3 months to 3 years, we add details that keep their hats in place. Our baby chapkas feature faux fur-trimmed ear flaps and a buttoned chin strap, while our baby ear-flap knit hats tie right under the chin.
Should my child wear a neck warmer or a balaclava?
Both do a great job of blocking out the chill, depending on the forecast and how long you plan to stay outside. A neck warmer covers the neck and tucks neatly into the jacket collar to seal out drafts, and our polar fleece tubes easily pull right up over the nose when the wind picks up. For blustery days, long outdoor outings, and ski trips, a balaclava covers the head, face, and neck in one piece while leaving just the eyes open. Our polar balaclava is warm enough for snowy days yet light enough to fit comfortably under a ski helmet. Both styles are available up to size 16, with baby neck warmers starting at 6 months.
What should my child wear under a snowsuit?
All-day warmth starts with a soft thermal base layer worn right next to the skin. Our one-piece and two-piece thermal underwear is crafted from soft brushed recycled polyester in sizes 6 to 24 months for babies and 2 to 14 for kids, while our merino blend sets add 40% merino wool for temperature regulation. To keep toes just as cozy, our cushioned ski socks blend merino wool with recycled Repreve polyester for all-day comfort inside their boots.
